Ireland & UAE battled in Brisbane, Australia in the POOL B match of World Cup 2015. On one hand where Ireland’s eyes was on 2nd win in a row, UAE was still searching for their first win. Winning the toss, Ireland opted to bowl first. UAE openers started quite well as they scored 44 runs in the first 10 overs with losing any wicket.
Then Ireland bowlers pulled the match towards themselves in next 10 overs. First Stirling & then Kevin O’ Brien struck 2-2 wickets in quick succession and reduced UAE to 78/4 in 21 overs. Then Shaiman Anwar tried to handle the situation with Khurram Khan & added 47 runs for 5th wicket. Khurram Khan became the first UAE batsman to score 500 ODI runs before he got LBW out by Dockrell.
After losing Rohan Mustafa also just after Khurram Khan, UAE was 131/6 in 35 overs and found themselves in deep trouble. Then Amjad Javed joined Shaiman Anwar at the middle, they rescued UAE & did it quite well. They added 107 runs for 7th wicket which is now the record in the world cup for this wicket. Shaiman Anwar 106 (83), played exceptionally well and scored the first ever World Cup ton for UAE well supported by Amjad Javed’s 35 balls 42. UAE finished their 50 overs with 278 runs under their belt on the loss of 9 wickets. UAE scored 186 runs in last 25 overs (RR- 7.44) which was much needed to set a good total against a brilliant chasing side, Ireland.
Ireland got a shaky start while chasing the total when they lost inform Stirling in the 2nd over. Porterfield & Joyce added 68 runs for 2nd wicket before Joyce got caught behind out on 37. Ireland found themselves in trouble when they lost Porterfield & Niall O’Brien in quick succession. They were reduced to 97/4 in 26 overs.
That is when Wicket-keeper Gary Wilson came to the rescue. He played some excellent shots and added crucial 74 runs for the fifth wicket with Andrew Balbirnie and then 72 runs for the sixth wicket with Kevin O’Brien. He made 80 runs off 69 balls and a major role in Ireland’s run chase.
Wilson’s inning was well supported by Kevin who scored a quick 25 balls 50 with 8 fours & 2 sixes which was much needed to cover up the run rate of 9.6 in last 10 overs. Ireland lost Kevin in 45th over but Wilson was still there and he continued to decrease the distance between runs & balls. The situation was looking pretty comfortable with 12 off 16 balls, however, UAE made a comeback with the dismissal of Wilson in the 48th over. It was the closest match of this world cup with 3 runs required in last over and Dockrell & Cusack somehow managed to be cool & took their team to the finishing line with 4 balls left.
