New Zealand vs Afghanistan – Stats & Review

New Zealand & Afghanistan battled in Napier, New Zealand in which host team crushed Afghanistan quite comprehensively. Afghanistan won the toss & decided to bat first. The first innings was all about Boult & Vettori who took 3 & 4 wickets respectively.

Vettori took 4 wickets for 18 runs

Afghanistan was in deep trouble when they were reduced to 59/6 in 20 overs. Then Shenwari Najibullah Zadran added 86 runs for 7th wicket. They both scored fifties and took Afghanistan to 186 before they got all out in 48th over. Vettori was the main star with 4/18 in his 10 overs.

Chasing 187 was a cake walk for the home team. McCullum fired with all his cylinders and scored 19 balls 42 runs. Guptill scored 57 and with help of Williamson’s 33 & Taylor’s unbeaten 24, Kiwi team reached the target in 37th over with 6 wickets in hands. With 10 points in 5 matches, Kiwi team is playing like Champions. 

Man of the Match – Daniel Vettori

Stats of this match –

  • Daniel Vettori reached 300 ODI wickets, he is 2nd oldest (36y 40d) to reach this milestone after Jayasuriya.
  • Vettori is the only 2nd player to reach 7000 Runs & 700 Wickets across all formats.
  • Only 2nd time New Zealand played 5 consecutive ODIs without any change, last time in 1998.
